Killing Us With Kindness

We had a solid day of biking today, we covered at least 70km by 3pm. Of course we were packed up and on the road by 8am. We encountered some potholes along the way.

We also had an encounter with a giant lobster, but I survive to tell the tale.

We arrived at our first Warm Shower (a site for cyclists) today.  Charles met us on his bike (he is in much better shape than both of us combined). We followed him to town, he kept a slow pace for us. From there we threw our bikes in the back of his truck and left for the house. After he made sure we were showered he took us on a quick tour of the local national park (Kouchibouguac). Here we made a quick visit to the beach.

That evening we got to know Charles and his wife Marthe, as well as an intern working with them (Freddie). They treated us to an amazing dinner of lobster (and scallop) casserole! There also might have been some wine involved. After a delicious meal and some good conversation we got to spend a chilly night indoors.

We took the next day off to rest and enjoy their hospitality. We gave our bikes the Royal treatment, they really needed it after the mud from the other day. Afterwards we setup our hammocks in the backyard and relaxed for a bit.

Did I mention their backyard led right down to the Kouchibouguac River?

We spent the rest of the day doing a lot of nothing. We made them a simple dinner and after a couple drinks, and a hockey game, we had to pack our stuff for the morning.

We will be out of contact for a couple days, no signal where we will be going. Hopefully we will be able to start hitting 100km a day soon. We will be in the bush for the next couple days, going up hills more than down hills. Luckily we will be getting a special treat on Saturday, Charles will be joining us for a night of camping! That means a fire and some beer! Hopefully we will have a picture of a bear or moose in a couple days.

  1. That was no pot hole that was a crater. Road was obviously closed to cars. Boy you guys need a better trip tick. Don’t know who planned the route but you seem to hit all the bad stuff, dirt, mud, puddles the size of lakes, and washed out roads. Great story and it will make for a great book.

  2. Great blog and great to meet you guys outside the Lévis ferry. Don’t forget to try the smoked meat at Schwartz’s Deli on St. Laurent when you get to Montreal and then head further up the street to Laurier Avenue to Dieu de Ciel for the best craft beer place in town.

If you need a place to flop while in Montreal, my other son is at home. Email me and I’ll send you the contact info.
